The Friend of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section Award is a new award to recognize an individual/group/organization who has made outstanding and enduring contributions to the practice of cardiovascular or pulmonary rehabilitation and has been an advocate of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section and/or the profession of physical therapy.
Our first recipient graduated from Yale Medical School and he is currently the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Medicine at the University of California in San Diego.
He has been described as a true friend to the physical therapy profession. He has promoted the field of physical therapy as part of pulmonary rehabilitation to his colleagues in pulmonary medicine. When the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) and the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) revised their guidelines our awardee recommended having the APTA and the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section review these guidelines and make changes based on their input.
Our recipient personally contacted the President of the American Thoracic Society (ATS) to recommend a liaison between the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section and the ATS. He has been a speaker at CSM and has promoted physical therapys involvement in pulmonary rehabilitation to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid, the ATS, ACCP, and AACVPR. He is also a consultant on the current task force to develop oxygen guidelines for physical therapist practice.
Many of our members view our recipient as the Father of Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
Our Section is grateful for his support of our specialty and our profession. It is with great pleasure that we recognize Dr. Andrew Ries as the first recipient of the Friend of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section Award.
