Welcome to the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section

The Section has a 30-year history of promotion and advancement of cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy practice, education and research. Our membership spans the United States as well asfour other countries and reflects diverse practice settings, perspectives and experiences.Evidence of our contributions to the physical therapy profession can be found in our leadership, our educational programs, our publications, our specialty certification but, most importantly, in the dedication and activism of our members!

 

  • This website is the portal to information and resources that will:
    • support members in their professional development and career advancement;
    • provide consumers with necessary information regarding physical therapy for conditionsrelated to, or resulting from, heart, lung or vascular disease;
    • promote the American Physical Therapy Association’s achievement of Vision 2020.

  • Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section Member Awards Jun-05-2008
    • Elizabeth J. Protas, PT, PhD, FACSM, FAPTA and Colleen M. Kigin, PT, DPT, MS, MPA, FAPTA have been named as Catherine Worthingham Fellows of the APTA. Congratulations to both of you for this well-deserved distinguished honor.

      Richard W. Bohannon, PT, EdD, DPT, NCS, FAPTA, FAHA has received the Jules Rothstein Golden Pen Award for Scientific Writing, Congratulations for this well-deserved award.

  • UPDATED REQUIREMENTS FOR RECERTIFICATION AS CCS: Jun-01-2008
    • Effective May 2008, current clinical specialists who are applying via portfolio for RECERTIFICATION no longer are required to have ACLS certification. However, if a specialist has completed this course, he/she can log this under continuing education on the portfolio.

  • Emergence of Trendy Hookah Bars in the United States Apr-13-2008
    • The use of waterpipes (often referred to as “Hookahs”) is on the rise again. Hookah bars and cafes are becoming more prevalent and are being marketed as a way to get together with friends. The health risks of waterpipe tobacco use are the same as those with cigarette use. The American Lung Association has published a paper that can be used to educate patients and the general public on the dangers of the Hookah use.
