| Linda Crane Award |
|
History:
Dr. Linda Crane was a dedicated member of the profession of physical therapy since 1970, and was someone who helped to create a significant part of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section’s history. She was one of the first three APTA board certified clinical specialists in cardiopulmonary physical therapy (awarded in 1985), and was awarded the Lucy Blair Service Award for distinguished service to the profession in 1992. In the early years of the Cardiopulmonary Section she served as Program Chair, Chairman of the Section (1982-86), and Delegate to the House of Delegates.
Linda’s clinical practice specialty was in the area of pediatric cardiopulmonary physical therapy, and she was a dedicated educator as well, having served on the faculties of University of Connecticut , University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of New England, and the University of Miami.
Dr. Crane died on March 24, 1999 after a lengthy battle with metastatic breast cancer.
Purpopse:
To acknowledge an individual who has made outstanding and enduring contributions to the practice of physical therapy as exemplified in the professional career of Linda Crane.
Eligibility:
Nominees for the award must:
- be a member of the APTA;
- be a member of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary, Education, or Pediatrics Section;
- have demonstrated excellence/expertise in either clinical practice, academic practice, or in the area of research;
- have demonstrated contributions to the Association through State, Section, or National involvement.
Nature of Award:
- The recipient will receive a commemorative plaque which will be presented at the lecture ceremony.
- The Linda Crane Lecture will be published in the Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy Journal following the lecture.
Procedure for Nomination:
- Please submit nominations on the nominating form (available through the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary, Education, and Pediatrics Sections’ Web sites, or from the Nominating Committee).
- Nominees will be contacted for additional information, including a CV and names of potential references.
- Send materials to the Awards Committee Chairperson, as listed on the nomination form by November 1st of each year.

| Mentoring Award |
This award is designed to recognize members of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section, APTA whose distinguished careers have resulted in the mentoring of professionals who went on to serve others through their teaching, scholarship, and/or clinical practice. All members of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section, APTA with at least 5 years of active membership in the Section are eligible for the award. Past recipients of the award are eligible for re-nomination after 5 years.
Selection Criteria
The primary criterion for the award is demonstrated excellence in mentoring. Mentoring can take many forms. A worthy nominee may excel at one or more of the following:
- Mentors other physical therapists while assuming a leadership role within the section.
- Examples: Leadership role in the profession; serving on Section committees, or demonstrating mentorship as a member of a PT faculty or clinical instructor
- Develops an effective environment for high quality clinical practice, teaching and scholarship.
- A clinical director who supports and promotes the development of staff (high number seeking board certification, presenting and publishing, development of residency program)
- A faculty member who promotes effective teaching and scholarship productivity of his/her graduate students by being well funded in grants, equipment to support laboratory or clinical research
- Fosters the development of talents in others, including effective patient care, research skills, teaching ability, presentation and writing skills.
- This could be demonstrated in abstracts, papers, etc. that students have written, or via recommendations from peers/colleagues who have worked with students that have been mentored by this individual
- Demonstrates professional behavior and serves as a positive role model
- Actively demonstrates the core values of the APTA
- Promotes new practitioners, educators and scholars with the Section and the broader professional community.
- Provides guidance in administrative matters.
- Demonstrates support of colleagues and encourages networking with professional colleagues.
- Advises students and clinicians regarding options for advancement in the profession.
Nomination and Selection Process
- Nominations will be accepted from January 1 through November 1st for awards made in February at CSM of the following year.
- Nominees must be a Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section member or recently converted to lifetime APTA member.
- Nominations must include a cover letter and a second letter of reference discussing the selection criteria
- CV needs to be included in the nomination.
Submit nomination to the Nominating Committee of the Section. The Nominating Committee will make sure all materials are received and forward these materials on to the President of the Section. The voting for the award will be made by the Section President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and the members of the Nominating Committee.
The selection will be made by December 1st and the individual will be notified by the President by December 15th to allow for the individual to make arrangements to attend the CSM meeting.

| Merit Award |
|
PURPOSE:
To recognize an individual who has contributed to the advancement, knowledge, and/or recognition of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section – APTA, Inc. Such contribution may be defined as:
- practice, which includes excellence in patient/client care, clinical accomplishments, in addition to efforts in securing favorable legislation governing clinical practice and reimbursement; and/or,
- scholarlship, which includes teaching (patient, clinical, continuing education, academic), or research, and/or authorship (book, journal, editorial board); and/or,
- service, which includes contributions on behalf of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section through one’s membership and substantial involvement in support of the Section.
CRITERIA:
A nominee must be a member in good standing of the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section at the time of the nomination. Individuals in all APTA membership categories are eligible with the exception of those who are classified as “Student,” “Honorary” or “Retired.”
Award criteria are divided into specific categories (Practice, Scholarship or Service) and are described below. A nominee must fulfill the required criteria in at least one category to be considered for the award.
Practice
- Required: Evidence of a minimum of five years of clinical practice in the area of cardio-vascular and pulmonary physical therapy
- Required: Evidence of clinical recognition by patient/family, peer, and/or employer
- Suggested: Board Certification as Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Specialist
- Suggested: Evidence of legislative efforts governing practice and/or efforts to support payment for cardiovascular & pulmonary physical therapy services.
Scholarship
- Required: Evidence of extensive patient, clinical, and/or academic teaching
- Suggested: participation as faculty in continuing education conferences sponsored by the Cardiopulmonary and Vascular Section.
- Suggested: formal invited presentations as a Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section representative.
- Suggested: research or program development advancing the knowledge of cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy.
- Suggested: a published author of research, book, chapters; or service in an editorial capacity for peer review journal supporting cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy.
Service
- Required: evidence of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section committee, task force and/or officer participation.
- Suggested: evidence of other contributions of service to the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section
- Suggested: evidence of liaison activities with other professional groups on behalf of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section
PROCESS:
- Nominators must be members in good standing of the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section – APTA, Inc. at the time that they submit a nomination for this award.
- A current nomination form must be completed in typewritten or print format and submitted to the Chair of the Nominating Committee no later than the deadline provided on the form. Forms may be downloaded from the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section website.
- The Nominating Committee will collect and review all nominations submitted by the deadline. During their review the Nominating Committee will:
- verify that all nominations are complete
- verify that nominees are members in good standing with APTA and the Section
- rank the nominees according to the number of criteria categories for which information has been provided.
- Review of the nominations will take no longer than 4 weeks from the deadline. Upon completion of the initial review, the Nominating Committee Chair will forward the nominations and the results of the review to the Section Officers for final review and award determination.
- The award will be determined based upon the substance of the contributions made, not simply the number of activities listed.
- The award winner will be notified by the Section President no later than one month prior to the Combined Sections Meeting at which the award will be presented.
- Award recipients receive a plaque acknowledging their contributions. The plaque will be presented at the Section’s Annual Membership Meeting at CSM if the recipient is in attendance. If the recipient is unavailable to attend CSM then the plaque will be mailed to him/her following the meeting. An announcement celebrating their award also will be placed in various Section media.

| Research Award |
Purpose: Originally created
in 1990, the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section – APTA,
Inc. Research Awards are designed to recognize outstanding cardiovascular
and pulmonary research presentations provided at each year’s
Combined Sections Meeting.
Awards: One award each is given to the presenter(s)
of the best platform presentation and the best poster presentation.
Recipients receive a certificate of achievement acknowledging their
contribution. A notice of their awards also is placed in various
Section media.
Eligibility: The platform and the poster presentations
must have been selected by the Section as part of the programming
at the Combined Sections Meeting.
Selection committee: Members of the Section Research
Committee evaluate all of the research presentations.
Criteria for selection: Evaluators rate each platform
and poster presentation on the following criteria:
- clinical relevancy,
- clarity of presentation,
- research design,
- knowledge of topic,
- effective use of visuals.
Platform presentations also are rated on the effectiveness of the
vocal presentation and the use of the time allotted.
Timeline: Awardees receive their certificate
about one month after the Combined Sections Meeting. Awards are
announced at the subsequent Annual Meeting.

Research Grant |
| Purpose: Originally
created in 1995, the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section –
APTA, Inc. Research Grant is designed to stimulate well-defined
research studies that are related to cardiovascular and pulmonary
physical therapy. The grant is supported through Section fund raising
activities as well as through donations by individuals or Section
business partners.
Minimum Guaranteed Funding: $1,000.00 annually.
Additional funds may be available each year if contributions exceed
the amount provided in the Section’s operational budget.
Eligibility: There are two eligibility requirements
for the Section research grant:
1) the investigator must be a member in good standing of the Cardiovascular
& Pulmonary Section at the time of application and receipt of
the grant; and,
2) the proposed study must be related to cardiovascular and pulmonary
physical therapy.
Graduate student members may apply and use the funding to defray
the costs associated with thesis or dissertation research. The funding
also may be used to assist with travel to present research findings.
Recipient Responsibilities: Grant recipients are
required to complete the following items:
1) An interim progress report must be submitted by February 1 during
the funding year.
2) Upon completion of the study, a manuscript/report must be submitted
for publication to Physical Therapy or the Cardiopulmonary Physical
Therapy Journal.
Failure to fulfill these requirements will cause the applicant
to be ineligible for future funding from the Cardiovascular and
Pulmonary Section.
Selection Committee: Members of the Cardiovascular
& Pulmonary Section Research Committee will review applications
and select a grant recipient each year based on the criteria outlined
below.
Selection Criteria: Evaluators rate each proposal
on the following criteria:
- title and specific aims,
- summary of the relevant literature,
- description of the research problem and purpose of the study,
- methodogy (sampling and assignment, instrumentation and procedures,
statistical analysis)
- style and organization
The score given to a proposal is an average of the ratings from
all evaluators.
Timeline: A call for proposals will be issued
via the Section Journal and Section Website starting in the fall
of each year and will remain open until the submission deadline.
The annual submission deadline is May 1. Late submissions will
be returned to the applicant without review.
The recipient will be notified by the Chair of the Section Research
Committee no later than June 15. Funds will be released to the recipient
on July 1.
Application Process: The following should be submitted
electronically as a Word or Adobe Acrobat file:
- research proposal (not to exceed 5 pages),
- abbreviated curriculum vitae/resume (not to exceed 2 pages)
- proposed budget.
The research proposal should include:
- a title page,
- specific aims,
- summary of relevant literature,
- proposed methodology including design, description of subjects,
instrumentation, procedures
- proposed analysis.
All of the application materials will be submitted electronically
to the specified Section Research
Committee member on the current year’s call for proposals.

Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section Human Performance Endowment Fund |

We are pleased to announce the creation of the “Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section Human Performance Endowment Fund” with the Foundation for Physical Therapy. This endowment will provide funding for scholarships and research grants to investigate physical therapy management of patients with, or at risk for, cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders, as well as to investigate physical therapy’s role in prevention, fitness and health promotion.
The first scholarship to be funded will be the Scot C Irwin, PT, DPT, CCS, Doctoral Scholarship, and may be awarded as either a PODS I or PODS II level DOCS scholarship. Dr. Irwin was a founding member of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section – APTA, Inc. and its first president as well as one of the first board certified specialists in this practice area. He died unexpectedly in August 2005.
