Description: This 2-hour course emphasizes key considerations applicable to the physical therapist and physical therapist assistants in effectively managing patients with permanent pacemakers and implantable cardioverter- defibrillators (AICD). The course aims to educate the clinician on the basics of pacemakers and defibrillators. Each device will be presented with specific reference to its indications for use, the respective functions, as well as complications and their implications for the physical therapist. In addition, the course accentuates different levels of impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities for patients with these devices. Evaluation strategies, effective treatment techniques, and appropriate patient education will be emphasized.
Upon completion of this course, you’ll be able to:
1. Understand the basics of pacemaker function.
2. Discuss the indications for use of a cardiac pacemaker and implantable cardioverter- defibrillators (AICD).
3. Review the types of pacemakers and defibrillators that exist in clinical practice.
4. Describe and give examples of various complications and relevant physical therapy implications of pacemakers and defibrillators.
5. Select, demonstrate, and provide rationale for utilization of various examination techniques when evaluating patients with pacemakers and defibrillators.
6. Identify the goals and outcomes of cardiovascular rehabilitation for patients with pacemakers and defibrillators.
